Description
An account of the resource
This traditional dress was made for Antonia Rocca around 1949 before she came to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. It was made for Antonia's wedding and then worn only on special occasions.
This dress was made by hand by two women living in Vicalvi and Casalvieri, Frosinone Italy. The very small pleating of the skirt, the embroidery work and the bead work took many hours. The hand sewing was very specialized.
In Sarnia the largest number of Italians within the Italian community arrived from that southern Lazio region known as Ciociaria which happened because of chain migration from that area to Sarnia. Many members of Antonia Rocca's family and extended family settled in Sarnia in the 1950s.
The newer outfit from 1949-1951 was exhibited at the National Museum of History in the year 2000 when the museum held the exhibit about Italians in Canada for a year.
